What business loans Fifth Third offers
Fifth Third splits its small business lineup into the bank's own loans and SBA-backed loans. Here is what it publishes:
| Product | What it is for, per the bank |
|---|---|
| Unsecured line of credit or loan | Quick access to capital without pledging assets |
| Secured line of credit | Day-to-day working capital, such as payroll and other short-term cash-flow needs |
| Secured term loan | Large investments: vehicles, equipment or business expansion |
| Commercial real estate loan | Buying, expanding, renovating or building commercial property your business occupies |
| SBA loans | Working capital, equipment, real estate and refinancing, with more flexible amounts and terms |
| Provide | Digital financing for medical, veterinary, dental and optometry practices |
It also advertises a lending program for women- and minority-owned businesses in Chicago and Detroit. If your business is in one of those cities, ask about it at a branch.
Fifth Third's SBA loans
The most detailed part of its site covers SBA loans. Here is what it publishes for each program:
- SBA 7(a): up to $5,000,000, as a term loan or line of credit. It can fund expanding or building commercial property, working capital, equipment, debt refinancing or exporting.
- SBA Express: similar to the 7(a), with a simpler application and faster approval. Per the SBA, the maximum is $500,000.
- SBA Veterans Advantage: for veterans and members of the military community who want to start or grow a business. It covers active duty, retirees, Reserve and Guard members, and current spouses or surviving spouses of a service member or veteran can take part.
- SBA 504: $125,000 to over $10,000,000 to buy fixed assets such as real estate or equipment, together with a Certified Development Company (CDC). Down payment from 10% and a job-creation requirement.
- CAPLines: a revolving line of up to $5,000,000 for short-term or seasonal working-capital needs.
Fifth Third highlights that SBA loans can be fixed or variable rate, with terms of up to 25 years depending on the use, no balloon payment at the end, and the option to finance closing costs. If you are weighing programs, our guide on getting approved for an SBA 7(a) loan explains what the bank reviews, and 504 vs. 7(a) shows which program fits which project.
Requirements: what it publishes and what it does not
For SBA loans, Fifth Third lists the SBA's basic requirements:
- The business must be for-profit.
- It must operate in the U.S. or its possessions.
- It cannot have more than $15,000,000 in tangible net worth or average net income after federal taxes of more than $5,000,000 over two years.
- It must show it can repay the loan from current cash flow.
On top of that comes the citizenship rule that took effect March 1, 2026 (SBA Procedural Notice 5000-876626 and SOP 50 10 8): 100% of the direct and indirect owners of a 7(a) or 504 applicant must be U.S. citizens or nationals with their principal residence in the U.S. Permanent residents can no longer own any share. If your immigration situation or your partners' raises questions, talk to an immigration attorney about your situation.
What Fifth Third does not publish: minimum credit score, minimum time in business, minimum revenue, amounts for its own loans, rates, or whether it accepts ITIN applicants. Its business lending pages also do not say whether Spanish-language service is available. You will learn all of that in a meeting with a banker. Its site does make clear that every loan and line is subject to credit review and approval.
Fifth Third pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Broad lineup of SBA programs, including Express, Veterans Advantage, 504 and CAPLines | No published minimum credit, time in business or rates |
| SBA terms up to 25 years with no balloon payment | SBA loans require all owners to be citizens or nationals |
| Secured and unsecured options, plus real estate loans | The process starts with an appointment, not a five-minute application |
| Monthly fee waiver on Business Premium or Business Elite checking with an active loan or line | For the waiver, the account and the loan must belong to the same company and the loan must carry a balance or activity in the cycle |
| Digital financing program for medical and dental practices | Does not publish whether it accepts ITIN |
If you qualify for an SBA or bank loan with Fifth Third, it usually costs less than most online options. What you pay in exchange is paperwork, time and stricter requirements. A practical rule: if your need can wait several weeks and your business has solid numbers, start with the bank; if the money is for an opportunity or emergency that will not wait, compare fast options first and keep the bank for long-term financing.
Who should apply at Fifth Third (and who should not)
It makes sense if:
- Your business has several years behind it, good credit and tax returns that show a profit.
- You want to buy or expand the space your business operates in, and a 504 with a down payment from 10% works for you.
- You are a veteran or a military spouse and want to explore SBA Veterans Advantage.
- You already bank with Fifth Third and want to use the monthly fee waiver.
Look elsewhere if:
- You need the money in days, not weeks.
- Your credit is bruised or your business is under two years old.
- You have a green-card-holding partner and were counting on an SBA loan.
- You prefer a phone or online process with no branch appointment.
For that last group, Merchant Fund Express reviews your sales and deposits as well as your credit, considers FICO 500+, works with amounts from $5,000 to $5,000,000 and often decides in 2 to 4 hours. Collateral is not required in most cases, it offers Spanish-speaking support and it accepts applicants with an ITIN (no SSN needed).
How to apply at Fifth Third, step by step
- Gather your documents: business and personal tax returns, recent financial statements, bank statements, company documents and, for real estate or equipment, the quote or purchase contract.
- Define the use of funds. The bank will ask what the money is for, and that determines whether a line, a term loan, a 7(a) or a 504 fits best.
- Book an appointment with a banker through its site. Ask about credit and time-in-business requirements, rates, fees and whether Spanish-language service is available.
- Ask about response times. SBA loans take longer than the bank's own loans.
- Compare before signing. Get the offer in writing and compare it with at least one other option. Our list of the best banks for small business loans helps you choose.
Alternatives to Fifth Third
- Merchant Fund Express (recommended funder): for fast money with more flexible requirements. You can apply for free with no impact to your credit and compare that offer with the bank's.
- Another bank with SBA programs: if your profile is bank-ready but Fifth Third does not win you over, shop others. SBA lenders differ a lot in speed and appetite.
- Credit union or CDFI: often more flexible with small businesses and sometimes with ITIN applicants.
- If the bank said no: read the best alternatives to bank loans before you accept the first offer that lands in your inbox.
However you go, compare offers on the same terms: amount, payment frequency, total cost in writing, collateral and personal guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Fifth Third business loan with an ITIN?
Fifth Third does not say on its business lending pages whether it accepts ITIN applicants, so you will need to ask at your appointment. For SBA 7(a) and 504 loans, since March 2026 all owners must be U.S. citizens or nationals. If you have an ITIN, Merchant Fund Express accepts applicants with an ITIN (no SSN needed). Talk to an immigration attorney about your situation if your status is a factor.
What credit score do I need for a Fifth Third loan?
The bank does not publish a minimum score. It only says every loan and line goes through credit review and approval. As a traditional bank, it usually looks for good personal and business credit, a tax history and cash flow that shows you can repay. Ask for the exact requirement at your appointment before authorizing a credit pull.
Does Fifth Third offer SBA loans for veterans?
Yes. It publishes the SBA Veterans Advantage program, built for veterans and members of the military community, including active duty, retirees, Reserve and Guard members. Current spouses and surviving spouses of a service member or veteran can also take part. The business must meet the other SBA and bank requirements.
How much can I borrow on an SBA loan with Fifth Third?
According to its site, the 7(a) goes up to $5,000,000, CAPLines offers lines up to $5,000,000 and the 504 runs from $125,000 to over $10,000,000 for real estate and equipment. The SBA caps SBA Express at $500,000. What you are approved for depends on your cash flow, credit and use of funds.
How long does Fifth Third take to approve a loan?
It does not publish response times for its business loans. It describes the unsecured line as a way to access capital quickly and SBA Express as faster than the 7(a), but bank and SBA loans usually take longer than an online option. If you need the money now, compare with a funder that decides in hours.
What should I do if Fifth Third denies my loan?
Ask for the reason in writing. If it was credit, time in business or cash flow, work on that point and try again later. In the meantime, consider options that review sales and deposits, such as our recommended funder, or a credit union or CDFI that works with small businesses.
